Yet another structure to be found around the banks of the Burrator Reservoir near Yelverton in Devon UK...

This one appears to be some sort of storage building left over from the 2nd World War.

Longstone Manor

 

This is a view of Longstone Manor another of the various structures that can be found around the edge of Burrator Reservoir near Yelverton  on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.....

Reservoir Hut.....

This hut can be found on the bank surrounding Burrator Reservoir on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. Another image of nature showing the upper hand with a disused man made structure..... 

Reclamation..... Bus Stop.

I have always been fascinated by the way nature slowly reclaims the space taken by disused man made structures... This is a perfect example where nature is slowly reclaiming the space taken by a bus stop that has not been used for many months... 

The Home of the Quarterjack. ...

This is the Minster in Wimborne Minster which is a small town in Dorset...

On the north side of the west tower you will find a replica of a grenadier dressed in his very smart red coat.
He is what is called a Quarterjack and he strikes the bells to tell the time every quarter hour.

Originally he was a monk but was repainted as a grenadier during the Napoleonic wars 1803 / 1815.

A freshly painted set of doors looks very smart...... 
However....
A set of doors with flaky paint and rotting wood is far more interesting... 
Texture always wins over smooth.

Another viewpoint...

This is another view of the cemetery chapel that I posted on the blog last time.
The octagonal angle turret can clearly be seen on the right of the image. A bank of four psuedo machicolations are also visible above the two windows.

Cemetery Chapel.....

This is the chapel at the Plymouth road cemetery in Tavistock, Devon UK.
It is a grade 11  listed building circa 1880 and a gift to the town from the then Duke of Bedford.

It is a very elaborate design for a cemetery chapel. It is built in the French Gothic style with buttresses, octagonal angle turret, psuedo machicolations and a massive porch.
It was designed by Henry Clutton and made of local Dartmoor granite.

I have passed the cemetery on many occasions but I have never taken an image of the chapel.
 Last week I headed down to Plymouth road with my Fujifilm camera with a plan to capture and create an antique looking photograph with a sense of sinister mystery about it.

 Looking at this final image I think that I may have achieved my photographic objective - do you agree?

The Ruins......

The ruins of an old castle may be enchanting enough to be seen and admired, but one can't dwell there.
 Be careful where you choose to be.

The Enigma of a near death experience......

The tunnel of death connecting this world to the next.
Upon death, most people go through a heavenly process before entering into heaven.
Evil people instead of experiencing the tunnel and bright light upon death are sent through what some call the left door and enter into an abyss of empty, joyless, nothingness for a brief period of time. Most people who go through the heavenly process go through a tunnel and towards the light of God...

Turnspit Dog or Dog Wheel...

This is a Turnspit dog/ Dog wheel that can be found in the kitchen of St Briavels castle in Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire in the UK.

This is the only one left in the world that still works and is in it's original position. Small dogs were used to walk around in the wheel in order to turn meat on a spit so that the meat was cooked evenly.

 Dogs were bred specifically for this purpose. The small dogs were short legged and long bodied and a special breed was created to carry out this very gruelling work. Medieval kitchens would have been very hot and smokey and not a good working environment for either humans or small dogs.

 The breed of dogs has long since died out but some experts think that they were similar to a terrier in overall looks ...

Public Humiliation...

The Pillory was used in England up until 1837 when it was abolished.

 It was a form of punishment in which public humiliation was a major part.
 The victims wrists  and neck were held in place and it put quite a bit of strain on the person's back.

 Members of the public would often throw rotten vegetables... dead animals and faeces.
 Stones and other blunt objects were also thrown.
 Due to the nature of the pillory restraint the victim would be unable to defend themselves.

 Flogging and mutilation could be added to the punishment as well.
 British authorities favoured branding the face with a mark of shame such as cutting off one or both ears or slicing the nose lengthwise.

For lessor crimes the stocks would be used where just the victims legs would be restrained allowing them to at least attempt to defend themselves with their free arms and the ability to move their head....

The use of the Pillory and the Stocks is where the saying 'A laughing stock' came from hinting at the humiliation that the victims suffered .....

The Ghoul-Gate.

One grave in every graveyard belongs to the ghouls.
 Wander around any graveyard long enough and you will find it, water stained and bulging with cracked or broken stone, scraggly grass or rank weeds about it and a feeling when you reach it of abandonment.
 It may be colder than the other gravestones too and the name on the stone is all to often impossible to read.
 If there is a statue on the grave it will be headless or so scabbed with fungus and lichen as to look like fungus itself.
 If one grave in a graveyard looks like a target for petty vandals that is the Ghoul-Gate.
 If the grave makes you want to be somewhere else, that is the Ghoul-Gate.
